Mark 6:1-52
SUMMARY
Verse 3-people despised Jesus (people from His home town). They did not fear Him or give Him the respect He deserved. They relied on what they knew about Jesus, on what they saw, they knew His mother and father and actually they knew Him as the carpenter, they knew all His brothers and sisters and to them, Jesus was not and could not have been the Messiah, He was another guy from their village!
Verse 5-due to their unbelief, Jesus could not do any mighty work there
Verse 11- Jesus sent His disciples (gave them power over the unclean spirits). He gave them strict instructions on how the mission would be carried out. They were commanded not to take anything for the journey, not to wear sandals and whoever would not receive them or hear them, they should shake off the dust under their feet as a testimony against them (things would be intolerable for them in the day of judgment).
Verse 34- Jesus was moved with compassion for the multitude which was following him and He started teaching them many things
Verse 36- the disciples knew that the people had nothing to eat and they were not willing to do anything. They actually told Jesus to send people away. They (disciples) were limited by their circumstances; they underestimated the power of God.
Verse 41-44- Jesus fed the multitude with 2 fish and five loaves. All were satisfied and there were even some leftovers!!
Verse 46- Jesus always withdrew from the crowd and His disciples and went to pray.
LESSONS
1. I should not judge/despise people based on what I see. My natural eyes should not limit me. I should not disqualify myself on the assignment that God has given me based on my current situation. Faith is key when God wants to do something in my life. My unbelief can hinder me from receiving what God has for me. I should take the word of God seriously, coz those who do not receive it will be judged on that day.
2. He is the Lord of impossibilities. Nothing is too hard for Him. If He was able to feed 5k men with just 2 fish and 5 loaves and there were baskets of leftovers, He can do much more in my life. What I am learning in this miracle is that I should put all my trust in God come what may. He is able to do more than we can ask or imagine.
3. Jesus always created time to pray. Sometimes when I read these scriptures about how Jesus prayed, I can’t stop asking myself why He needed to pray. For all I know He is the son of God, while on earth He was fully God and fully man so He had all the power and I am imagining that He would have still performed miracles and healed the sick if He didn’t pray at all, I mean, He is God. Jesus here on earth needed to keep His dependency on God, His father. He had to maintain His father-son relationship. What God is teaching me today is to rely on Him, that I can’t do without Him and the only way I get to build a healthy relationship with my savior is through prayer, His word and constant fellowship with Him. If I want my ministry to grow and become a successful Christian I have got to go on my knees.
